The MHSAA basketball playoffs began earlier this week, with several area teams vying to advance to Jackson.
In girls action, Kossuth got a big game from Morgan Hodum and beat South Pontotoc on the road (1:13). Tupelo’s young squad beat Northwest Rankin (2:32), and Belmont blew past Houston by 50 points (3:44). Looking ahead, some notable second-round matchups include Ripley at Shannon and New Site at Calhoun City (5:28).
On the boys side, North Pontotoc kept its historic season going by holding off Houston (6:30), as Clark Mills led the way. Booneville beat a bigger South Pontotoc squad (8:11), with freshman Kaleb Guy scoring 22 off the bench. Some fun second-round matchups are on tap for Saturday, including Center Hill at Saltillo, Biggersville at Ashland and East Webster at Ingomar (10:43).
Brad and Dalton also look at soccer, where Saltillo’s boys won their first state title (12:17). And the baseball and softball seasons start this weekend (13:02).
