Big news came down Tuesday in the basketball world. That’s the lead item on this week’s podcast, as Brad and Dalton discuss the change the MHSAA made to the format of the basketball state tournament (1:10).
For the past four years, teams that advanced to the quarterfinal round earned a trip to Jackson. Starting this upcoming season, quarterfinal games will be held at school sites, which means reaching Jackson requires advancing to the semifinals.
A lot of coaches aren’t happy with the format, and they are especially upset that they were not consulted by the MHSAA on the decision.
Also today, the guys look back at some key football results from Week 2. Tupelo rallied late to stun Corinth in overtime (7:35), with tailback Jaquerrious Williams scoring all five of the Golden Wave’s touchdowns.
Nettleton put on another strong defensive performance in a win over Hamilton (11:09). The Tigers have yet to allow a point through two games.
Itawamba AHS won a shootout with New Albany (12:48), and the Indians were led by running back Ike Chandler, who is off to a blazing start this season.
Looking ahead to Week 3 games, Brad and Dalton preview the West Point-Starkville matchup (13:59). West Point has won the last two Class 5A state titles and has a 30-game winning streak. But Starkville is considered by many to be the best 6A team in the state – the Yellowjackets are No. 1 in the Daily Journal Large School rankings.
The annual A-Game rivalry is renewed when Amory visits Aberdeen (16:14). The host Bulldogs have won their last nine meetings against the Panthers, and with Fred Fields at QB, they have a great chance at extending the streak to 10.
Nettleton will put its 2-0 record on the line when it visits Booneville (18:39). We should learn just how good the Tigers’ defense is when it faces Booneville back Dallas Gamble, one of the area’s most dynamic playmakers.
Finally, the guys honor the Athletes of the Week (19:33): Allison Hanby of TCPS and A.I. Nugent of Myrtle.
