#174: Breaking down division scenarios – 10/30/19

It’s the final week of the football season for Classes 2A, 3A and 4A, while two weeks remain for 1A, 5A and 6A. That means teams are jockeying for playoff seeding.

Brad and Dalton take a look at some games that will have big impacts on the postseason brackets. One of those is Tupelo at Horn Lake (7:21), with the Golden Wave looking to be at least a No. 3 seed out of 1-6A. Over in 1-3A, Booneville can clinch the division by beating Nettleton (9:39), but the Blue Devils would finish fourth with a loss. And in 2-4A, the winner of Shannon-Pontotoc will earn the No. 2 seed and a first-round home playoff game (11:49).

Looking back at last week, Smithville aided its playoff push with a win over Tupelo Christian in the rain (2:09). Booneville bounced back from an upset loss by beating Amory (3:55), while Tupelo rolled past DeSoto Central (5:41).

The guys also touch on volleyball (13:48), as three area teams reached the Final Four in Starkville last week. New Albany got all the way to the title match.

Basketball begins this week, and the action includes the annual Hound Dog Classic at Tupelo (14:55).

Also this week, a Shoutout for Tupelo’s swimming team (17:17) and Athletes of the Week (17:35).

#173: Division races heating up – 10/23/19

Football division races are nearing the finish line, with several critical games on tap this week.

On this episode, Brad and Dalton preview a 1-3A showdown between Booneville and Amory (6:09). The Blue Devils are coming off a tough loss to Kossuth, while the host Panthers are riding a six-game winning streak.

In 2-4A, Itawamba AHS hosts Pontotoc, with both teams sporting 3-0 division marks (8:43). But Pontotoc is a bit of a mystery, given how slowly it started the season.

And in 2-1A, TCPS visits Smithville in what’s likely a must-win game for both teams in regards to a playoff berth (9:44).

Also, the guys take a look back at some Week 9 highlights. West Point held off Grenada (1:19), Starkville upended No. 1 Madison Central (2:53), and Tupelo blew past Lewisburg (3:49).

On the volleyball front, three area teams advanced to the state semifinals Tuesday (11:25). New Albany and Belmont are making their first trips to the Final Four, while Alcorn Central is there for the second time in three years.

#172: Big division showdowns highlight Week 9 – 10/16/19

Teams are in the thick of division play, and on this week’s podcast, Brad and Dalton look at some of the big matchups on tap for Week 9.

In 1-3A, Nettleton hosts Amory (12:32). The visiting Panthers boast an array of offensive weapons, but the Tigers have come up with some big plays on defense this season.

Corinth travels to New Albany for a 1-4A tilt (15:58). Corinth runs that tough-to-defend Wing-T offense, and New Albany’s defense has been vulnerable against the run at times.

The biggest matchup from a statewide perspective is Madison Central at Starkville (18:08) – the No. 1 team in the state versus No. 3. It also happens to be a 2-6A game, and Starkville is looking to keep its long home winning streak intact.

Also this week, the guys look back at some of last weekend’s results. Tupelo edged Southaven in a thriller (1:39), Itawamba AHS held on against Shannon (5:06), and Smithville fell to West Lowndes in the rain (7:51).

In non-football news: basketball teams opened preseason practices Monday, and Brad has an update on Tupelo’s girls (20:49); Lafayette softball coach Katie Jenkins is fighting for her job (22:30); and the volleyball playoffs begin Thursday (23:11).

#171: Mooreville appeals probation; Tupelo rolls – 10/02/19

Big news broke late last week: Mooreville’s football team has been placed on probation by the MHSAA after it left the field before the end of its game with New Albany.

On this episode, Brad and Dalton examine the situation (13:37). The probation means the Troopers will not be eligible for the playoffs, but there is some hope: Mooreville filed an appeal, and that is expected to be ruled on this week.

Also on this episode, the guys look back at some Week 6 action. Itawamba AHS blew past Houston in a battle of unbeaten teams (2:02), with big plays aiding the Indians’ efforts. Tupelo returned from an off week and handled its business against Hernando to open Division 1-6A play (4:38). And Noxapater edged Tupelo Christian in overtime in a big 2-1A showdown (6:36).

Looking ahead, one of this week’s big games is East Webster at Calhoun City (8:46). It’s the 2-2A opener for both squads, and East Webster is looking to remain undefeated. Also this week, Tupelo hosts Olive Branch (10:29), while Houston visits Noxubee County in its 4-3A opener (12:21).
