#156: Area teams bring home baseball, softball titles – 05/22/19

The spring sports season wrapped up last week with the baseball and softball championships, and several area teams brought home hardware.

Down in Pearl, North Pontotoc won its first state title in baseball thanks to stellar pitching and the hitting of Ty Roberson (1:44). Calhoun City, in its first trip to the finals, bounced back from a Game 1 loss to win the 2A crown (5:03). And Smithville, after losing in the title series in both 2017 and 2018, came away with the 1A trophy behind the play of Jared Johnson and Layne Williams (8:12).

In softball, Vardaman (1A) and South Pontotoc (3A) both won titles (10:53), the first for each program.

Brad and Dalton have some coaching news: Justin Hollis is leaving Myrtle after getting its football program off the ground (13:55), while Hamilton has hired Neshoba Central offensive coordinator Wade Pierce to lead its football team (15:23).

The guys also have the weekly Shoutout (16:39) as well as Athletes of the Week (18:32).

#155: Softball finals preview; golfers win state – 05/08/19

A lot of hardware is being handed out this week in various sports.

On this episode, Brad and Dalton preview the MHSAA softball championships (1:21), which start Thursday in Hattiesburg and Starkville. Four area teams are vying for titles: Smithville (1A), Vardaman (1A), South Pontotoc (3A) and Tishomingo County (4A).

Baseball is in the semifinal round this week, and three series will feature area-on-area matchups (5:21). Saltillo faces Lafayette in 5A, Booneville meets North Pontotoc in 3A, and Smithville takes on West Union in 1A.

Some local golfers fared well earlier in the week. Tupelo’s boys rallied behind freshman Walker Wise to win the 6A crown (8:42), while Booneville’s boys won their fifth consecutive 3A trophy (10:07).

Finally, the guys give a Shoutout to Mooreville’s Dylan Allen (12:53), and they present Athletes of the Week (14:11).
