The spring sports season wrapped up last week with the baseball and softball championships, and several area teams brought home hardware.
Down in Pearl, North Pontotoc won its first state title in baseball thanks to stellar pitching and the hitting of Ty Roberson (1:44). Calhoun City, in its first trip to the finals, bounced back from a Game 1 loss to win the 2A crown (5:03). And Smithville, after losing in the title series in both 2017 and 2018, came away with the 1A trophy behind the play of Jared Johnson and Layne Williams (8:12).
In softball, Vardaman (1A) and South Pontotoc (3A) both won titles (10:53), the first for each program.
Brad and Dalton have some coaching news: Justin Hollis is leaving Myrtle after getting its football program off the ground (13:55), while Hamilton has hired Neshoba Central offensive coordinator Wade Pierce to lead its football team (15:23).
