#49: Taking a look at area’s top basketball teams – 12/21/16

As the calendar year winds down, several area basketball teams have established themselves as forced to be reckoned with. On this episode, Gene looks at which teams have made good impressions thus far (6:30).

Two of those teams are Tupelo’s boys and girls squads. On Tuesday, the girls knocked off reigning Class 3A state champ Booneville (1:20), while the boys bounced back from their first loss (3:04). Gene also has praise for New Site’s teams (4:09) and the Ingomar boys (5:31), who are led by the scoring tandem of Kelton Hall and Jay Pickens.

Also this week, Gene has an update on Tupelo bowling (9:55) and Athletes of the Week (12:28).

#48: Wave, Raiders off to strong starts; Joiner lighting it up – 12/15/16

As we near Christmas, it’s becoming evident just who some of the area’s stronger basketball teams are, and on this episode the guys look at a few of those squads, including Tupelo’s boys (1:13), Shannon’s boys (3:34), Baldwyn’s boys (4:42) and Ingomar’s girls (5:47).

Brad and Blake briefly discuss other teams that are doing well (9:23), including both New Site’s boys and girls. Also, Gene discusses the subject of a recent story he wrote, Oxford scoring machine Jarkel Joiner (7:10).

There is some football to talk about, as well. Blake and Gene have completed the difficult task of selecting the annual Daily Journal All-Area Football Team (11:11), including coach of the year and players of the year. Blake will be in Gulfport on Saturday to cover the Bernard Blackwell All-Star Classic, and he previews it here (14:40).

And, of course, we have Athletes of the Week (16:20).

#47: Three area teams bring home state titles – 12/07/16

Three area football teams played for state titles last weekend in Starkville, and all three of them won. On this episode, Blake looks back at each game. In Class 2A, Calhoun City ended its title drought (2:09); in 4A, Lafayette won its third championship (6:50); and in 5A, West Point rode its defense and run game to its eighth state crown (8:40).

And now that football is over, it’s time to turn full attention to the hardwood. Blake reviews Baldwyn’s win over Saltillo on Tuesday (9:56), while Gene recaps Shannon’s win against Nettleton (12:13). And in girls action, Lafayette beat Ingomar – in FIVE overtimes (14:44).

Also, Gene has an update on the Booneville girls and their star player, Adallice Young, who’s playing despite not being 100 percent healthy (16:49). And the guys present Athletes of the Week (19:08).
