#186: Saltillo girls rising; soccer playoffs begin – 01/29/20

It’s a jam-packed show on the last Wednesday of January.

In this episode, Brad and Dalton recap some important basketball games, including Tupelo’s girls beating Olive Branch (1:47). The Lady Wave raced to an 18-0 lead and never trailed. Saltillo’s girls scored a huge upset by beating Lafayette, the Daily Journal’s No. 3-ranked team, on Tuesday night (4:16).

On the boys side, New Site held off Potts Camp in a Division 1-2A showdown (6:07). And there was a lot of good action at Saturday’s Hotbed Classic (8:37). There are more big games coming up this weekend (10:37), including New Albany-Ripley boys and Baldwyn-Smithville boys.

The MHSAA soccer playoffs began this week. Dalton saw Corinth come up short against Caledonia in 4A girls (11:49). Tupelo’s boys and girls both won Tuesday (13:01), while Mooreville’s girls steamrolled New Albany (13:50).

Also starting this week was preseason practice for baseball and softball teams. Dalton has an update on Pontotoc baseball (14:33), while Brad looks at Mooreville softball (16:16).

Also, the guys have a Shoutout (18:29) and Athletes of the Week (19:02).

#185: New Site video fallout; Hotbed preview – 01/23/20

There is much basketball for Brad and Dalton to discuss today – both on and off the court.

New Site has lost some games after a vulgar video made by students of the school surfaced (1:26). The video, which included a racial slur, was sent to a black Booneville player. Saltillo and Booneville have both canceled games against New Site. Potts Camp tried to move its games with New Site to a neutral court, but the Cardinals will have to play the division contests there on Friday (12:57).

On the court, the guys recap some of the recent action. Biggersville’s boys ran past Pine Grove to pick up a big Division 1-1A win last Friday (4:11), and Saltillo came up short against reigning 5A state champ Center Hill the same night (5:56).

Booneville’s boys knocked off Houston on Monday (7:53), as three of the Blue Devils’ guards took on the bulk of the scoring load. And at the Mid-Mississippi Challenge on Saturday, the Pontotoc and New Site girls both got last-second wins (9:51).

Looking ahead to this weekend, the Hotbed Classic and Robertson’s Sportswear Lady Challenge are on tap Saturday (10:43). The all-day affairs will feature loads of in-state and out-of-state talent.

In football news, Ken Adams left Hatley after three seasons to be head coach at Mantachie (13:59). The guys wrap up the show with a Shoutout (14:54) and Athletes of the Week (16:29).

#184: Falcons, Seminoles win division openers – 01/15/20

We’re in the meat of the 2019-20 basketball schedule, with big games every night.

On this episode, Brad and Dalton recap No. 1 Ingomar’s win at Tremont in both teams’ Division 2-1A opener (5:35). In another 2-1A showdown, Smithville used a big third quarter to pull away from Wheeler (8:48).

More big games are coming, including Pine Grove at unbeaten Biggersville in a 1-1A tilt on Friday (11:31).

Looking back to the weekend, Hannah Campbell led New Site’s girls past Baldwyn in the Prentiss County Tournament title game (2:00). On the boys side, Booneville beat New Site for the crown, and the Blue Devils are starting to come together behind new point guard Bryton Smith (3:36).

Also on the show, the guys preview the Union County Tournament and the Mid-Mississippi Challenge (13:06). They also have a Shoutout (15:07) and Athletes of the Week (16:25).

#183: Tangle recap; Lady Aggies win rematch – 01/08/20

There has been a lot of good basketball this past week.

On this episode, Brad and Dalton recap the annual Tangle on the Trail, held Saturday at Pontotoc. Tupelo’s girls took down No. 1 Lafayette (2:04), making the Lady Wave the Journal’s new top-ranked team. On the boys side, Jesus Ruedas led Ripley past Potts Camp (6:52).

On Tuesday night, Kossuth faced Belmont in a rematch of last season’s Class 3A state championship game (12:06). Once again, Kossuth was the winner, as Zoe Essary notched 26 points and 13 rebounds.

New Site’s boys opened up the Prentiss County Tournament with a convincing win over Baldwyn (14:48). Carson Fitzsimmons scored 25 points to lead the Royals.

Looking ahead, Tupelo’s girls open division play Friday with a trip to Olive Branch (18:22), and several county tournaments tip off this week (19:30).

This week’s Shoutout goes to the Oxford girls soccer team (19:58), and the guys present Athletes of the Week (20:33).
