#178: Football North finals on tap – 11/26/19

The MHSAA football playoffs continue this week with the North finals, and four area teams will be in action.

On this episode, Brad and Dalton preview the games, starting with Greenwood at Corinth in Class 4A (9:41). In 5A, West Point is seeking a fourth straight trip to the title game, with Neshoba Central standing in its way (12:05). And in 6A, Oxford hosts Starkville in a rematch of a regular season game won by the Yellowjackets (13:54).

The guys also recap some of last week’s football action. Behind its stellar defense, Oxford shut down South Panola and its vaunted rushing attack (2:10). Corinth ran past Itawamba AHS (5:39), and West Point rallied to beat Lafayette again (7:59).

On the hardwood, Dalton talks about Baldwyn’s boys, who edged Houlka on Monday night (16:12). Brad was at the Saltillo Shootout and has an update on Kossuth’s girls (19:33).

The guys also have a Shoutout (21:32) as well as Athletes of the Week (23:16).

#177: Big-time playoff games on tap – 11/20/19

We’ve got a packed show for you this week.

The football playoffs are in the North semifinal round, and there are several huge matchups on the schedule. Brad and Dalton look at the 4A tilt between Itawamba AHS and Corinth (11:23), both of which feature dangerous rushing attacks. They also preview Lafayette-West Point (13:27), a rematch from the regular season won by the Green Wave. Oxford hosts South Panola (15:11) in a game featuring 6A’s best defense in versus the best offense.

The guys take a quick look at a few other matchups, too, like Noxapater at Biggersville (9:50).

There were some good games last week as well. In the Football Rewind, the guys recap South Panola’s win over Tupelo (1:37), Baldwyn’s win against Tupelo Christian (5:35), and a last-second win for IAHS against West Lauderdale (8:34).

On the basketball court, Pontotoc beat Lafayette on Tuesday in a battle of the Daily Journal’s top-ranked girls teams (18:07). On the boys side, Shannon rallied past Nettleton (21:00).

Also this week, the guys have a Shoutout for a couple of basketball signees (24:12), plus Athletes of the Week (24:31).

#176: Chargers, Eagles get big wins – 11/13/19

Football teams in Classes 1A, 5A and 6A wrapped up the regular season last week, and several games carried heavy playoff implications.

One of those games was West Lowndes at Tupelo Christian (1:57). TCPS needed to win by at least five points to qualify for the 1A playoffs, and they did more than enough, rolling to a 35-6 victory. Oxford, meanwhile, shut down Tupelo’s offense in a 14-3 win to claim the Division 1-6A crown (4:07).

In first-round playoff action, Pontotoc kept its hot hand, rallying past rival North Pontotoc in a 4A tilt (7:18).

Looking ahead to this week, Brad and Dalton break down some of the big playoff matchups. TCPS visits Baldwyn in what could be an offensive shootout (9:30). Tupelo must visit South Panola to open the 6A playoffs (12:16), while in 3A Houston hosts a North Panola team that is not your typical No. 4 seed (14:21).

The guys also have plenty of basketball to discuss. Pontotoc star DeeDee Shephard is back home after a big health scare last weekend, and she expects to return to the court this week (17:20). Brad recaps the Bank of Pontotoc Classic (19:59), where Tupelo’s girls, Kossuth’s girls and Saltillo’s boys all picked up impressive wins.

And Brad was at Ingomar on Tuesday night, where the Falcons took down Ripley in a battle of top-10 boys teams (22:56).

The guys also have a Shoutout (24:48) and Athletes of the Week (25:55).

#175: Football playoffs begin; Tupelo strong on hardwood – 11/06/19

The MHSAA football playoffs kick off this Friday, with several area teams in action.

Brad and Dalton break down some of the big games, including Shannon at New Albany (11:59) in what could be a high-scoring affair. In another 4A tilt, rivals clash when Pontotoc hosts North Pontotoc (13:40).

As for the regular season, that wraps ups this week for Classes 1A, 5A and 6A. Tupelo has a chance to win the Division 1-6A title when it hosts Oxford (8:40), but the Golden Wave will need to win by at least 11 points.

Tupelo is coming off an impressive road win against Horn Lake (1:58), as the defense threw a shutout in the second half. Also last week, Booneville rolled past Nettleton to claim the 1-3A crown (4:42), and Pontotoc upended Shannon (6:39).

Basketball season has begun, and both of the guys got out to the Hound Dog Classic on Saturday. Tupelo’s boys looked strong in defeating reigning 5A state champ Center Hill (16:48), while the Lady Wave locked down defensively in a win over Starkville (19:07).

Elsewhere on the hardwood, Oxford’s Tykel Owens scored a career-high 41 points in a win over Calhoun City on Tuesday (20:27).

The guys close out the show with Athletes of the Week (20:59).
