#215: Platt, Colom highlight All-Area picks – 12/30/20

The Daily Journal All-Area Football Team was released on Sunday, so Brad and Dillon take a close look at it and how the selections were made.

Stan Platt was an easy pick for Coach of the Year after leading Biggersville to its first state championship appearance (2:40). Players of the Year were a little tougher to pick (4:32). The honorees are Walnut’s T.J. Colom (Offensive), Oxford’s Tristan Shorter (Defensive), and New Albany’s A.I. Nugent (Two-Way). The guys also break down the large school and small school teams (10:50).

On the hardwood, North Pontotoc’s girls got a nice win against Ingomar (12:43), with Shemiah Hadley scoring 16 points after halftime. New Site’s boys found some holes in Ingomar’s defense in a 60-52 win (15:07), and Saltillo’s boys held off a late rally by West Union (18:35).

#214: Warriors claim No. 1 spot – 12/23/20

Happy Festivus, everyone! Brad and Dillon celebrate “Christmas Eve Eve” by talking lots of hoops.

New Site’s girls started fast and beat North Pontotoc on Tuesday (1:33). Lily Whitley had 24 points, while Ivy Loden had 17 points and seven assists. In boys action, Keaton Wilkerson led Pine Grove past Wheeler (4:24), scoring 31 points. And Pontotoc took down No. 1 Starkville last week (6:41), launching itself to the top of the Daily Journal rankings.

The guys have some football to discuss (10:01), such as the Bernard Blackwell Classic, Houston’s Jalen Washington, and the forthcoming All-Area squad.

#213: Booneville, Ingomar starting to roll – 12/16/20

COVID-19 and injuries can both slow a team down, but a couple of area squads have started putting things together.

On this episode, Brad and Dillon have an update on Booneville’s boys basketball team (2:26), which has seen its season interrupted by the pandemic. But the Blue Devils have won three in a row since losing to Alcorn Central last week.

Ingomar’s boys have won seven straight, including all five games since star Zach Shugars returned from an injury (4:40). One of those wins was a big comeback effort against Houston on the road.

Corinth’s boys picked up a big win Tuesday against No. 8 Ripley (7:07). Also today, Brad has a soccer update from Tuesday night’s Itawamba AHS-Pontotoc matches (9:41), both of which went down to the wire.

The guys wrap up the show with a Shoutout (12:40) and Athletes of the Week (14:33).

#212: Area teams go 0-for-4 in Jackson – 12/09/20

All four Northeast Mississippi football teams playing for state football championships in Jackson last weekend came home empty-handed.

On this episode, Brad and Dillon recap the games, most of which came down to the very end. In Class 1A, Biggersville gave up a long touchdown pass to Lumberton and came up short, 20-14 (2:42). There was similar heartbreak for Oxford, which lost the 6A title tilt 29-28 when Oak Grove converted a two-point try with 7 seconds left (6:20).

Calhoun City was overwhelmed by Ty Keyes and Taylorsville in the 2A game (9:58), losing 42-0. And in 5A, West Point’s string of four-straight state titles was ended by West Jones, 33-27 (13:41).

On the hardwood, Dillon recaps a big division win for the Itawamba AHS boys against Shannon on Tuesday (17:10). Keondra Hampton had a huge game to lead the Indians. Brad has a COVID-19 update (21:52), along with a Shoutout (23:34) and Athletes of the Week (24:13).

#211: Four area teams goin’ to Jackson

It’s football championship weekend, and four teams from the Daily Journal coverage area will be in Jackson looking to win a gold ball.

Brad and Dillon break down the matchups on today’s episode. But first, they look back at last week’s North finals. Biggersville stunned two-time defending 1A champ Nanih Waiya, 26-0, on the road (1:09). In 2A, Calhoun City fought off a scrappy East Union squad (4:35), with Thomas Clayton playing the hero in the fourth quarter.

Also, West Point and Oxford are both back in a title game after close wins (7:01).

The championships are being played at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson. Up first from our area will be Biggersville, which is 13-0 and playing in a title game for the first time (8:30). The Lions take on Lumberton, which is led by running back Robert Henry, at 3 p.m. Friday.

Oxford will meet Oak Grove on Friday night (10:47). The Chargers are looking to repeat as 6A champs, and they’ll be leaning on a defense that has been adept at creating turnovers.

On Saturday, Calhoun City battles Taylorsville, which is led by quarterback Ty Keyes (12:21). Keyes has posted insane numbers over his four-year career, so the Wildcats will have their hands full.

And wrapping up the weekend Saturday night will be the 5A title tilt between West Jones and West Point (15:36). The Green Wave are seeking a fifth-straight title and 12th overall, and those two midseason losses feel worlds away now.
