Gene Phelps has compiled the Daily Journal’s annual All-Area basketball teams, and while we won’t give anything away, he and Brad discuss some of the leading candidates to make the squad and what goes into the selection process (2:14). Also on this episode, Nettleton has a new head football coach in former Shannon standout Ken Topps (7:58), and the guys also touch on All-Area soccer (1:19). And Gene presents the Athletes of the Week (14:53).

Brad Locke is flying solo this week, as Gene Phelps is out on assignment, so it’s an abbreviated episode. Still worth a listen, though, as Brad looks at a couple of area baseball teams that have started well in division play – Ripley (3:41) and Tupelo (4:14). #14: Recapping the state basketball championships – 03/16/16

The 2016 MHSAA state basketball champions have been crowned, and four teams from Northeast Mississippi took home the gold ball last week. Gene Phelps and Brad Locke discuss those championship squads – Corinth’s boys (2:30), Booneville’s girls (4:53), Ingomar’s girls (7:14), and Ashland’s boys (10:39). Also today, they take a quick look at Division 1-3A baseball (12:13), and Gene has the Athletes of the Week (14:44).

#13: State basketball championships in full swing – 03/09/16

Gene Phelps is in Jackson covering the MHSAA basketball state tournament. A handful of Northeast Mississippi teams remain in contention for a gold ball, and so today’s show is all about hoops. Gene and Brad Locke talk about Booneville’s girls winning Wednesday (1:36), tonight’s 6A semifinal tilt between the Tupelo and Starkville boys (3:36), and the championship rounds that begin Thursday (6:58). Gene also discusses the biggest surprises so far of the tournament (11:22) and the biggest performances (13:09). And of course, we have Athletes of the Week (15:10).

The MHSAA state basketball tournament moves to Jackson this week, and 25 Daily Journal-area teams will be vying for a gold ball. Gene Phelps and Brad Locke will take a look at who’s got the best shot of bringing home a title (6:34), who has the toughest quarterfinal matchups (9:44), and some of the most intriguing storylines (11:28).
