#83: Tupelo, Pontotoc defenses dominate – 09/27/17

Tupelo’s defense continues to dominate the opposition.

On this week’s episode, Dalton looks back at the Golden Wave’s shutout win at Hernando to open Division 1-6A play (1:37). And he looks ahead to this week’s home game against Columbus (8:37).

Pontotoc also had a big defensive showing in beating Ripley (3:10), forcing seven turnovers and scoring on a fumble return. On the other side of the ball, Houston had a huge game against Amory (5:05), piling up 716 yards of offense.

Besides Tupelo-Columbus, a couple of other big games to watch this week are Smithville at Okolona in a 1-1A showdown (9:33) and Oxford-South Panola in a 1-6A clash (10:35). The Chargers might be without starting tailback Hiram Wadlington, who’s injured.

#82: Division openers and injured quarterbacks – 09/20/17

Class 5A and 6A teams open division play this Friday, which means there are some big games on tap.

Dalton previews Tupelo’s 1-6A opener at Hernando (5:25). The Golden Wave are 4-0 behind a strong running game. Meanwhile, Saltillo kicks off 1-5A play at unbeaten Olive Branch (9:55), and will be doing so without starting quarterback Tytus Heard, who broke his leg last week.

Brad also previews a non-division tilt between 4A schools Shannon and Clarksdale (7:43). The Red Raiders saw their QB, Jordan Gilleylen, suffer an injury last week, but he could be back Friday.

In looking back at Week 5, Dalton notes Oxford’s dominant defensive performance against Pontotoc (2:14); Brad looks at Kossuth’s blowout of New Albany (3:40); and the guys discuss Saltillo’s comeback win against Baldwyn (4:49).

As the season reaches its halfway point, a debate has bubbled up: Who is the best team in Northeast Mississippi, Tupelo or West Point (11:26)?

#81: Pontotoc rolls Aberdeen, faces Oxford next – 09/13/17

The Pontotoc Warriors are off to a 4-0 start despite some injuries. On this episode, Dalton looks back at last week’s win over Aberdeen (3:47) and previews this Friday’s matchup against Oxford (10:42).

Pontotoc played without star running back Immanuel Vance last week, but a strong defensive effort carried the day. Oxford is a very similar team: like Warriors, the Chargers have a strong running game, a stingy defense and a two-quarterback system. All three of those qualities helped in a win last week against rival Lafayette (6:43).

Also today, Brad and Dalton review Tupelo’s big win over Brandon (8:49), and they look ahead to a couple of other key games this week: New Albany at Kossuth (13:36) and Nettleton at Amory (16:10).

In some coaching news, Ray Weeks is out at Tishomingo County just four games into the season (2:24).

And the guys present Athletes of the Week (17:03), one of whom has been very prolific for South Pontotoc.

#80: Tupelo-Brandon among big games this week – 09/06/17

We’ve got some juicy football matchups this weekend. Brad and Dalton are here to break them down.

In what might be the best game in the state on Friday, Tupelo will pay a visit to Brandon (10:46) for a battle of highly ranked teams (Tupelo No. 3 in the state, Brandon tied for No. 7). The Golden Wave won 14-13 last year.

Aberdeen will take on Pontotoc in a matchup of two 3-0 teams (12:57). The Warriors are led by running back Immanuel Vance, who exploded for 377 rushing yards against New Albany last week.

The annual Crosstown Classic is on tap, too, as Lafayette – last year’s Class 4A state champ – is still seeking its first win of the season when it hosts Oxford (17:12).

Also on this episode, the guys look back at some key Week 3 results. Tupelo rolled past Clarksdale (1:38), Calhoun City topped Ripley behind its backup quarterback (4:10), and Aberdeen ran its A-Game winning streak to nine against Amory (7:11).

Finally, Brad presents Athletes of the Week (20:11).
