#299: West Point, Starkville advance to football finals – 11/30/22

The MHSAA football championship field is set.

Brad recaps last week’s games, including Starkville’s win over Tupelo in the Class 6A North final (1:53). The Yellowjackets blew a big early lead but rode QB Trey Petty to victory. In 3A, Amory had a big lead, too, but fell short in overtime against Noxubee County (5:13). West Point, to no one’s surprise, won in 5A (6:06).

And so West Point will now meet Picayune in a rematch of last year’s 5A title game (6:06). The Green Wave will face a daunting rushing attack led by Oregon commit Dante Dowdell. And in 6A, Starkville will battle Brandon (10:13).

On the basketball court, Brad has an update on Ingomar’s girls (11:48). He also discusses the Daily Journal All-Area volleyball team (13:40), plus he presents Athletes of the Week (14:27).

#298: Football North finals set for Friday – 11/23/22

Brad is back to whet your Thanksgiving appetite with some football playoff updates.

But first, hoops! Biggersville’s girls edged Choctaw Central on Saturday in a battle of defending state champions (2:02). And Booneville’s boys looked good in a win over Neshoba Central on Tuesday (3:18).

As for that football, Tupelo remained unbeaten with a win over Madison Central in the Class 6A quarterfinals (4:38), and Houston upset Itawamba AHS in 4A (5:59). So now the state semifinals, a.k.a. the North finals up here, are set for this Friday. Among the big games: Tupelo will host Starkville in a rematch (7:27), while Amory entertains Noxubee County in 3A (9:02).

#297: Football playoffs, coaching news, and hoops – 11/16/22

Brad is back with a jam-packed show.

He recaps some of last week’s football playoff action, including a blowout win for Itawamba AHS against Senatobia (1:46). Biggersville also rolled versus West Tallahatchie (3:21), and Amory took down North Panola (5:13).

Looking ahead to this week’s quarterfinals, Tupelo hosts division foe Madison Central (6:40), a team it beat 34-0 in the regular season. Hamilton puts its unbeaten mark on the line against Taylorsville (8:44), and Amory will battle a tough Winona squad (10:09).

On the basketball court, Pontotoc’s boys cruised past Amory on Tuesday (12:05), and Starkville’s Makhi Myles has signed with Wichita State (13:36). Also today: Booneville has a new football coach (15:27), a Shoutout (16:55), and Athletes of the Week (17:43).

#296: Unbeaten teams rolling into playoffs – 11/09/22

The football playoffs started for some classes last week, and they’ll begin for the rest this Friday.

On this episode, Brad examines the area’s four unbeaten teams, including Tupelo, which is 11-0 after trouncing Germantown last week (1:36). He also recaps Houston’s first-round win over Shannon (4:29), and Baldwyn’s close call versus East Webster (6:13).

Looking ahead, undefeated Itawamba AHS will host Senatobia in the second round of the 4A playoffs (7:07). In two other big 4A matchups, Ripley visits Louisville (8:32) and Houston hosts West Lauderdale (9:56).

#295: Tupelo clinches division; playoffs set to begin – 11/02/22

It’s playoff time in high school football, with Classes 2A, 3A and 4A playing first-round games on Friday. On this episode, Brad previews some of the notable matchups (10:22), including Shannon at Houston.

Meanwhile, teams in 1A, 5A and 6A are jockeying for playoff berths and seeding. There are a bunch of possible scenarios (7:41), with teams like Starkville and Thrasher among those vying for a spot.

Brad also looks back at some of the Week 10 action, including Tupelo’s dominant win against Clinton (4:59), which gave the Golden Wave the Division 2-6A title. Amory claimed the 4-3A crown with a blowout win over Nettleton (6:47).

There’s some basketball talk today, too, with the season starting last week. Brad recaps the Tupelo boys’ season-opening win (1:40), and he goes through his preseason rankings (3:24). Also on this episode: A Shoutout to former Thrasher football coach Willie T. Jackson (11:31) and Athletes of the Week (12:17).
