#46: Previewing the football state championships – 11/30/16

The MHSAA football state championships are being held this weekend in Starkville, and three area teams will be in action. On this episode, Brad and Blake take a look at each matchup.

In Class 2A, Calhoun City takes on Bay Springs (1:50), with Jessie Nabors and Jojo Gray leading the Wildcats’ potent offense. Bay Springs knocked off four-time defending state champ Bassfield to get here, so Calhoun City’s stingy defense will need to come up big.

Lafayette and Poplarville both bring 12-game winning streaks into the 4A final (7:07). The Commodores kept a high-octane Pontotoc offense in check last week, and it will be tested this weekend by a run-heavy Poplarville attack.

And in 5A, West Point faces Laurel (12:35). The Green Wave offense has a different wrinkle this year, with transfer quarterback Clayton Knight’s passing ability augmenting a normally run-centric scheme.

Also today, the guys present Athletes of the Week (21:15).

#45: Six area teams still alive in football playoffs – 11/23/16

The stakes get higher each week in the MHSAA football playoffs, and we have an action-packed show today looking back and looking ahead. Gene examines Tupelo’s loss to Madison Central and who will be back next season for the Golden Wave (1:49), plus the guys discuss wins by Pontotoc (5:21), Baldwyn (6:33) and Smithville (8:14).

Six Northeast Mississippi teams will play in the state semifinals this week, and we preview each game: West Point vs. Lake Cormorant (9:40), Pontotoc at Lafayette (11:57), Baldwyn at Calhoun City (13:17), and Smithville at Simmons (14:59).

Also, Gene previews the Lighthouse Classic basketball showcase (17:40), and Athletes of the Week are honored (19:22).

#44: Big playoff matchups feature area teams – 11/16/16

Eleven teams in the Daily Journal coverage area remain in the hunt in the state football playoffs. On this episode, the guys look back at some of last week’s big winners, including Tupelo (1:54), Amory (3:35) and Baldwyn (5:08), plus a tough loss for Kossuth (6:00).

This Friday, it’s the state quarterfinals, and several matchups feature area teams pitted against each other, including West Point at Oxford (12:15) and Amory at Lafayette (13:38). Other games to watch include Madison Central at Tupelo (8:43) and Noxubee County at Pontotoc (15:19).

Plus, Blake has an update on an injury to a key Smithville player.

And of course, Gene presents Athletes of the Week (21:08).

#43: Football playoffs in full swing this week – 11/09/16

Classes 6A, 5A and 1A open the football playoffs this Friday, a week after the other three classifications did so. No. 1 Tupelo has a full head of steam heading into its postseason opener, handling Olive Branch in the regular-season finale (4:17). On this episode, Gene Phelps gauges the Golden Wave’s matchup this week against Northwest Rankin (9:14), which has an explosive offense.

Also, Gene, Blake Morgan and Brad Locke look back at key wins last week by Amory (1:43) and Pontotoc (2:51), and a loss that left reigning 6A champ Starkville at home (6:10). As for the upcoming playoff matchups, some games of note include Cleveland at Amory (12:54), Pontotoc at Greenwood (14:55), and East Side at Kossuth (16:02).

And let’s not forget about basketball, with a new season tipping off last week. Gene has updates on Ripley’s boys and Ingomar’s girls (18:39). Plus, Athletes of the Week are honored (21:02).
