#182: All-Area football; Pontotoc boys on roll – 12/31/19

As 2019 comes to a close, Brad and Dalton have a little more football to talk about.

The Daily Journal’s annual All-Area team came out Sunday (2:39). The guys look at the selections, including players and coach of the year.

On the basketball court, Brad recaps the Kiwanis Classic (7:49), where Saltillo’s boys and Tupelo’s girls both picked up impressive wins. The guys also have an update on Pontotoc’s boys (10:39), who have won seven of eight after a slow start.

This weekend sees the return of the Tangle on the Trail showcase in Pontotoc (12:39). The field features 12 Journal-ranked teams, and the matchups include Belmont-Pine Grove girls, Lafayette-Tupelo girls, Potts Camp-Ripley boys, and Ingomar-Booneville boys.

The guys have a Shoutout for the Tupelo Christian girls basketball team (16:57), plus they present Athletes of the Week (17:55).

#181: Pegues picks Auburn; Warriors top Devils – 12/19/19

The early signing period has begun for Class of 2020 football recruits. On this episode, Brad talks about the decision Oxford’s J.J. Pegues made to sign with Auburn over Alabama and Ole Miss (2:04). And Dalton discusses Houston’s Calvin McMillian, who stuck with his Mississippi State commitment (4:51).

There’s a lot to talk about on the hardwood this week. Tupelo’s girls edged Ripley in a defensive struggle (6:45), with Makayla Riley and Halle Traylor coming up big. On the boys side, Pontotoc continued to play well in a win over Booneville (9:09), Ingomar held on to beat Houston (11:49), and Biggersville used a strong defensive effort to defeat Baldwyn (13:39).

Looking ahead, there are several pre-Christmas and post-Christmas basketball tournaments featuring tasty matchups (16:21).

The guys have two Shoutouts today (19:23), plus they honor the Athletes of the Week (20:44).

#180: Area teams bring home state titles – 12/11/19

Brad and Dalton have an action-packed show for you this week.

The 2019 football wrapped up last weekend in Hattiesburg, with three area teams making the trip and all three coming home with state championship trophies. Corinth won the 4A title in dominating fashion (1:28), earning its first title behind the play of quarterback D.T. Sheffield and linebacker Carter Bonds.

West Point won its fourth straight 5A crown (7:30), as its defense held the nation’s leading rusher in check. And Oxford claimed its first title (10:57), rallying past Oak Grove in the second half.

There’s plenty of basketball on this episode. Saltillo’s boys, led by T.J. Hannah, dismantled New Site on Monday night (16:46). Pontotoc’s girls took down Tupelo in a top-five battle on Friday (20:22), as Samya Brooks had a big second half. And Mooreville’s boys beat rival Mantachie on Tuesday (23:13).

There have been some recent football coaching moves, including the hiring of Jamaal Jackson at Bruce (24:26).

In some sad news, basketball coaching legend Jimmy Guy McDonald died last week (26:05), leaving behind a legacy that included much more than winning.

Also, the guys have a Shoutout (27:37) and Athletes of the Week (28:26).

#179: State championships on the line – 12/04/19

The football season, sadly, comes to an end this weekend in Hattiesburg. Six trophies will be handed out, and three area teams are in the mix to win them.

On this episode, Brad and Dalton preview the championships. First up is Oxford, which faces Oak Grove on Friday night for the 6A title (9:00). The Chargers are seeking their first state championship.

On Saturday, Corinth meets Poplarville in 4A (13:12). It will be a game featuring two big-time rushing attacks.

The final game of the weekend features West Point against Picayune (11:05). The Green Wave are going for their fourth straight 5A title, but Picayune is undefeated and boasts a 3,300-yard rusher in Cameron Thomas.

The guys also take a look back at last week’s North finals. Oxford beat Starkville (1:43), West Point shut down Neshoba Central (4:53), and Corinth gained revenge on Greenwood (6:18).

Some big football coaching news dropped this week, as former Calhoun City head man Perry Liles was hired to lead Ripley’s program (16:01).

On the hardwood, Tupelo’s boys held off Booneville on Tuesday night (17:25), while South Pontotoc’s girls beat rival North Pontotoc (20:30). And coming up this weekend is the Doc Vandiver Classic (22:05), hosted by Baldwyn.

There are multiple Shoutouts today (23:23), plus Athletes of the Week (25:16).
