#159: Golden Wave aiming for return to Jackson – 06/19/19

Area basketball teams are in the midst of summer league play this month, so Brad and Dalton have updates on several squads.

Walnut’s girls are coming off a strong season and will be led by Claire Leak (1:55), a natural scorer who is making the move to point guard. On the boys side, Itawamba AHS is looking to the guard-post duo of Jamerison Martin and Davon Wilder (4:20), while Houlka hopes to give Dashun Berry, the state’s leading scorer last season, more help (6:34).

Also, Tupelo’s boys are looking to get back to Jackson and have a solid core of players that could lead them there (9:30). Forward Josh Mitchell returns, as do guards Braxton Bishop, Mason Gary and Keondra Hampton.

This week’s Shoutout goes to Tupelo long snapper Hayes Hammond (14:09), and Brad previews his upcoming story on Myrtle multi-sport athlete Kinsley Gordon (15:58).

#158: Recapping All-Area; Biggersville looking forward – 06/12/19

The Daily Journal’s All-Area baseball and softball teams were unveiled on Sunday.

On this episode, Brad and Dalton take a look at the honorees. Smithville’s Jared Johnson was Player of the Year, while North Pontotoc’s Chad Anthony was Coach of the Year (1:27). On the softball side, top honors went to Houston slugger Aquana Brownlee and South Pontotoc skipper Adam Patterson (6:15).

Also today, Brad has an update on Ripley’s girls basketball team, specifically point guard Amelya Hatch (10:15). He also looks at the short-handed Pine Grove girls (11:45).

There’s football to discuss as well. Biggersville is coming off a historic season but is keeping its focus forward (13:03), while Amory quarterback Hunter Jones is recovering from an arm injury (15:36).

And this week’s Shoutout goes to Nettleton golfer Sarah Raper (17:18).

#157: Amory, Myrtle make coaching hires; summer hoops underway – 06/05/19

Just because it’s June doesn’t mean there’s nothing going on in the high school sports world.

For starters, a couple of big coaching vacancies were filled earlier this week. Amory hired Cade Hoggard, a former standout at Oxford, to lead its baseball program (1:57). And Myrtle promoted Jeremy Smithey to head football coach after the departure of Justin Hollis (5:08).

June also means summer basketball leagues. Dalton has an update on Houston’s boys (6:53), who return all their key pieces from a 22-win team and have also added a 6-foot-6 freshman. Brad looks at Pine Grove’s girls (9:40), who return Loren Elliott but also have some promising young talent behind her.

The Daily Journal held its annual Winter/Spring Sports Banquet on Tuesday, and the guys have a recap of some of the overall winners (12:12). Brad and Dalton also look ahead to the All-Area baseball and softball teams coming out on Sunday (13:28), and they remember Gerald Snider, the longtime basketball scout who died last week (16:28).
