#107: Byrd out at Kossuth; Tally retiring; Tupelo rolling – 03/28/18

Chris Byrd is out as Kossuth girls basketball coach.

That’s the big news this week. Brad and Dalton discuss the move (1:25), which Alcorn County School District Superintendent Larry Mitchell says was prompted by a verbal agreement – an agreement Byrd says never existed.

Another area coach is also on the move – Mooreville’s Jeff Tally is headed for retirement (6:20). He’s been at his alma mater since 1989 and has served in a variety of roles, including as athletics director since 2010.

On the baseball diamond, Mooreville swung for the fences Tuesday and picked up an important division win against Pontotoc (9:40). Jacob Hughes hit two home runs, including a tie-breaking grand slam, for the Troopers.

Tupelo’s baseball team continues to roll along (12:23). The Golden Wave are undefeated in division play but have to face a tough Oxford squad twice next week.

The guys also discuss Division 1-2A (13:58), which is loaded with the likes of East Union, Baldwyn and New Site.

And finally, they present Athletes of the Week (14:58), featuring a couple of players swinging hot bats.

#106: Coaches on the move – 03/21/18

Some big coaching moves have taken place in recent days.

On this week’s episode, Brad and Dalton discuss Pat Byrd’s departure from Saltillo (1:43), where he was head football coach for eight years. Also a former Amory head coach, he will be taking over the Winston Academy program.

Tupelo added a successful head coach to its staff with the hiring of Ryan Keeton (4:06). Keeton had a very strong three-year run at Nanih Waiya, which he led to the Class 1A state title game last season. He will serve as co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for Tupelo.

And in soccer, South Pontotoc’s Horace Kitchens has retired after 15 seasons coaching the boys and girls squads (7:26). He led the Lady Cougars to five consecutive state title game appearances between 2013 and 2017.

On the diamond, Brad took in a Kossuth-North Pontotoc game Tuesday night (8:33). The host Vikings rallied to win 8-4 and got a gutsy performance from starting pitcher Jake Reeder. Also, the guys look at Tupelo baseball (9:56), which opened division play Tuesday by defeating South Panola. And Dalton saw a softball slugfest between Smithville and Nettleton on Tuesday (11:18).

Finally, the guys present Athletes of the Week (12:51).

#105: Recapping the state basketball tournament – 03/14/18

The MHSAA basketball tournament wrapped up last weekend in Jackson, with four area teams claiming gold balls. On this week’s episode, Brad and Dalton take a lengthy look back at what went down.

Okolona’s boys completed their torrid run through Class 1A (3:13), led by a core of seniors who had previously come close to a title. Pine Grove’s girls won their second consecutive 1A title (5:14), while Ingomar’s girls made it three in a row in 2A (6:25). And Starkville’s girls won it in 6A (8:59) – this time on the court.

Brad takes a look at some of the top performers in Jackson (10:22) as well as the Daily Journal’s final basketball rankings (12:03). The guys also take a peek at All-Area hoops and soccer (12:55).

On the baseball diamond, Dalton recaps Houston’s win over Mooreville earlier this week (15:17), and he has an update on Mooreville pitcher Andy Franks’ record-breaking pitching performance from last week (16;23).

And finally, Brad presents Athletes of the Week (17:56).
