#210: Six area teams advance to North finals – 11/25/20

Championship dreams remain alive for six area football teams.

The North half finals are set for Friday, and Brad and Dillon break down each of the five matchups involving area squads. They start in Class 4A with Itawamba AHS at Louisville (11:10), which has a couple of studs on its defensive line. In 1A, Biggersville visits two-time defending state champ Nanih Waiya (14:27), which features two running backs with more than 1,000 rushing yards.

Two area teams meet when East Union visits Calhoun City in 2A (17:10). This is the Urchins’ first trip to the North final, but the Wildcats have been here plenty of times. West Point is no stranger to deep playoff runs, and the four-time defending 5A champs will try to keep their season alive with a visit to Ridgeland (20:33). Also, 6A champ Oxford hits the road against Clinton (22:31).

The guys also take a look back at some of last week’s action. IAHS got another great defensive performance in a 23-18 win over reigning state champ Corinth (2:21). Biggersville’s defense also showed up big in taking down Tupelo Christian (5:38).

On the basketball court, Belmont’s girls got an impressive win over Hernando and moved up to No. 1 in the latest Daily Journal rankings (24:24). Myrtle’s girls went on the road to upset North Pontotoc (27:04), and Nettleton’s girls improved to 3-0 with a win against Mantachie (28:21).

#209: Football rolls on as COVID strikes basketball – 11/18/20

The MHSAA football playoffs are in full swing for all classifications.

On this episode, Brad and Dillon recap some big games from last week, including North Panola’s win over Nettleton (1:38). The Cougars raced to a 33-0 halftime lead and finished with 511 yards of offense.

Amory pulled out a nail-biter, scoring with 28 seconds left to beat Choctaw County 27-26 (4:14). And Calhoun City, as expected, rolled over Mantachie (5:44).

Looking ahead to the quarterfinals, Calhoun City will face a much stiffer test this Friday when East Webster visits The Boneyard (8:46). The regular season meeting between these teams was canceled by COVID-19.

Reigning 4A champ Corinth will visit Itawamba AHS (12:11), which leans on a heavily opportunistic defense. The Indians have forced 38 turnovers, but they face a Corinth offense, led by Cayden Betts, that can light up the scoreboard.

Biggersville puts its 11-0 record on the line when it hosts Tupelo Christian (16:36). The Lions beat the Eagles in Week 1, 46-21, but Brad and Dillon believe the rematch could be much closer.

On the basketball court, Pontotoc’s boys started fast and never let up in an 86-50 win over Amory on Tuesday (20:57). New Site’s girls also cruised, taking a 74-55 win at Ingomar (24:37).

The guys have their weekly COVID update (26:19), as the pandemic has sent several teams into quarantine and canceled some big tournaments. They close out the show with a Shoutout (27:44) and Athletes of the Week (28:53).

#208: Playoffs in full swing; Mr. Football picks – 11/11/20

The football playoffs are in full swing for every classification this week, as Classes 1A, 5A and 6A begin postseason play.

On this episode, Brad and Dillon recap Oxford’s win over Tupelo to claim the Division 1-6A crown (1:29). Itawamba AHS opened the 4A playoffs with a dominant defensive performance against Leake Central (4:49). And Starkville surprisingly missed the 6A playoffs (6:44).

Looking ahead, Tupelo will host Warren Central (8:39), a team that wins with defense and physical play. In 4A, Ripley hosts Ponotoc in a rematch of a regular season game (11:01), which Pontotoc won. In 2A, Calhoun City visits Mantachie in a battle of strong rushing attacks (12:33).

COVID-19 is making more news, putting several area basketball teams out of commission for two weeks (14:52). And Lafayette’s football season is over after the team was forced into quarantine.

On the hardwood, Brad recaps Tishomingo County’s win against Saltillo in girls action (16:37).

The guys look at the Mr. Football awards, which were announced today (20:16). Did Tupelo Christian’s Khi Holiday get robbed?

Finally, there’s a Shoutout (26:32) and Athletes of the Week (27:11).

#207: Golden Wave gaining steam – 11/04/20

Tupelo’s football team has started to put things together toward the end of the season.

On this episode, Brad looks at the Golden Wave’s big win over Horn Lake last week (2:27). It’s Tupelo’s fifth-straight win, and a victory over Oxford this week would give the Wave the Division 1-6A crown (13:50).

Dillon recaps Walnut’s win over Mantachie (5:06). The Wildcats won despite their best player, T.J. Colom, being ejected in the second quarter. The guys also look at North Pontotoc’s upset of Corinth (7:49).

The playoffs start this Friday for Classes 2A, 3A and 4A. One game of note is Houston at Senatobia (10:01) in 3A, with the Hilltoppers hoping QB Red Parker is healthy enough to throw the ball. Itawamba AHS will host Leake Central in a 4A game (12:17).

The guys also talk hoops (19:12), including preseason rankings and recent wins by New Site’s girls and South Pontotoc’s girls. They also have a Shoutout (24:26) and Athletes of the Week (25:03).
