#190: Basketball playoffs enter quarterfinal round – 02/26/20

We are in the midst of the MHSAA basketball playoffs, and in this episode Brad and Dalton take stock of things two rounds in.

Pontotoc’s boys used a big third quarter to knock off New Albany in the Class 4A second round last week (1:52), overcoming Isaiah Ball’s big night. In 3A, Xavier Virges picked a good time to break out of his scoring slump as Houston topped Amory (3:33).

On the girls side, Ripley got revenge by defeating Louisville (5:25), which beat the Lady Tigers in last year’s 4A title game. And reigning 3A champ Kossuth, despite missing two starters, went on the road and beat Houston (7:26).

The quarterfinals tip off Thursday at various sites, with Brad covering at ICC and Dalton traveling to Mississippi Valley State. Thursday’s 1A action at ICC includes several area teams (9:27), including Pine Grove-Hickory Flat girls and Pine Grove-Baldwyn boys. In Itta Bena, both New Site teams and both Calhoun City teams will play in 2A on Thursday (10:26). Other matchups to watch include Pontotoc-Ripley boys on Friday and Starkville-Olive Branch boys on Saturday.

The guys also discuss last week’s diamond previews. Tupelo is the preseason No. 1 baseball team thanks to a wealth of returning pitching (12:23). In softball, Houston starts at No. 1, boasting one of the top pitchers in the state in Paige Kilgore (14:27).

The guys also have a Shoutout (16:23), and they present Athletes of the Week (17:29).

#189: Pontotoc, Houlka open playoffs with wins – 02/19/20

The MHSAA basketball playoffs started this week, with a host of area teams in action.

On the girls side, Saltillo struggled offensively in a loss to Cleveland Central (1:53), and South Pontotoc also had trouble finding points in a loss to Northeast Lauderdale (3:32).

On the boys side, Pontotoc got a big game from Rock Robinson in a win over Kosciusko (4:50), while Da’Shun Berry again led the way for Houlka in a win against Smithville (6:59).

There are some great second-round matchups this weekend. Ripley’s girls will host Louisville in a rematch of last year’s Class 4A state championship game (9:52), which was won by Louisville. Kossuth’s girls, the reigning 3A champs, will try to beat Houston despite two starters being out injured (11:43).

Pontotoc’s boys host New Albany in what’s expected to be an evenly matched game (12:56). And Amory’s boys look to stay hot when they travel to Houston (14:18).

The guys also have a Shoutout (15:26) and Athletes of the Week (15:54).

#188: Postseason hoops and lots of rain – 02/12/20

The basketball postseason has arrived, with division tournaments tipping off all around the region this week.

On this episode, Brad and Dalton first take a look at last week’s Pontotoc-Saltillo boys game (1:50), which got very chippy and was called off before the final buzzer. As for those division tournaments, Shannon’s girls erased a 22-point deficit to beat Mooreville on Tuesday (4:43), while Ingomar’s girls knocked off Smithville behind Katie Beth Hall’s 21 points (6:55).

The guys look ahead to some probable matchups in some of the tournament finals, plus they glance at the playoff format (10:19).

The rain won’t seem to stop, which has made it difficult for baseball and softball teams to get on the practice field (13:26). This week’s Shoutout goes to the Lafayette girls soccer team (14:46), and Brad presents the Athletes of the Week (15:23).

#187: Lions, Commodores score upsets – 02/05/20

The basketball regular season is winding down, and the past few days have featured exciting finishes and upsets galore.

Brad and Dalton look back at Biggersville’s boys knocking off No. 1 and previously unbeaten Ingomar on Monday (1:41). Devin Leatherwood came up with the big shots for the Lions.

On Tuesday, Pontotoc’s girls gained vengeance on Lafayette (3:44), and then Lafayette’s boys stunned the Warriors to pick up just their third win of the season (5:13). That was a one-point game, as was Ripley’s win against Saltillo (7:14), with Asa Howard making the winning basket.

More attractive matchups are coming Thursday and Friday. Ripley’s girls visit Lafayette in a top-5 battle (8:08); Ingomar’s boys go for a season sweep of county rival New Albany (9:16); and Pontotoc’s boys visit Saltillo (10:02).

On the soccer pitch, only one area team remains standing. Lafayette’s girls beat Saltillo to advance to the Class 5A final (10:41). The Lady Commodores are looking to win back-to-back state titles. Tupelo’s boys and girls both bowed out Tuesday (12:45), while Oxford’s girls came up short in overtime on Saturday (13:39).

The guys also talk a little football recruiting (15:09), give a Shoutout to Mantachie’s McKinley Montgomery (17:17), and honor Athletes of the Week (17:44).
