#128: West Point, Tupelo earn big division wins – 09/26/18

Big division games marked last week’s football schedule, and there’s more of the same this weekend.

On this episode, Brad and Dalton recap the Division 1-5A showdown between Lafayette and West Point (3:35). Tupelo opened 1-6A play with a win over Hernando (5:27), as Jaquerrious Williams and Peyton Puckett both had big games. In a key 1-1A battle, Okolona ran past Falkner (7:12).

Speaking of Okolona, it’s got another huge game this week at Smithville (8:55), which is also undefeated in division play. Unbeaten Booneville visits Kossuth for a 1-3A opener (10:17), and Oxford hosts a struggling South Panola in 1-6A action (12:18).

Also, the guys have an update on Pontotoc athlete Taylor Hughes, who recently had brain surgery (1:43). And they present Athletes of the Week (14:34).

#127: Okolona, Tupelo face big division games – 09/19/18

This week’s football slate is highlighted by some important division games.

Brad and Dalton preview the 1-1A showdown between Falkner and Okolona (7:58), which won the title last season. Okolona’s team speed could prove problematic for the Eagles, and on the other side of the ball, QB Lane Elliott will test the Chieftains’ defense.

Tupelo opens 1-6A play at home against Hernando (9:45). The Golden Wave had a week off to nurse some injuries and work on ball security issues.

And in 1-5A, two-time defending state champ West Point hosts a much-improved Lafayette team (11:14), which has three players closing in on 500 rushing yards.

Also, the guys look at some key results from last week. Corinth beat Itawamba AHS in a high-scoring affair (1:46); Oxford defeated turnover-prone Pontotoc on the road (4:23); and Shannon picked up a much-needed win against Senatobia (6:56).

But wait, there’s more football to discuss. Dalton looks at New Albany quarterback Losen Bolen (13:32), who is having a big senior season. Brad talks about his stories on TCPS coach Shaune Holiday and his son, QB Khi Holiday (15:46).

And the guys present Athletes of the Week (18:27). This week’s winners are Madison Jones of Saltillo and K.C. Ivy of Amory.

#126: A chat with Taylor Hughes

Taylor Hughes made headlines last year when she joined the Pontotoc football team as a kicker. She has excelled in that role, but Hughes’ high school career has been cut short.

On this episode, Brad and Dalton chat with Hughes (7:50), who has to have brain surgery next week. The multi-sport star talks about the challenges she’s facing and her hopes for the future.

Also, the guys look back at some notable football results from last week. Tupelo suffered its first loss of the season (2:09); Oxford beat rival Lafayette with a last-second field goal (3:20); and Biggersville edged TCPS in a division-opening contest (4:02).

Looking at the Week 5 slate of games, the guys highlight Senatobia at Shannon (5:02); Oxford at Pontotoc (5:53); and Corinth at Itawamba AHS (7:17).

Also, Athletes of the Week are recognized (20:39).

#125: J-Rock carries Wave; Panthers break A-Game skid – 09/06/18

Tupelo’s football team pulled out another white-knuckle win last week. On this episode, Brad and Dalton recap the Golden Wave’s 6-0 win at Clarksdale (1:38). Jaquerrious “J-Rock” Williams led the way, rushing for 148 yards and a touchdown as Tupelo improved to 3-0.

In a clash of two Class 3A unbeatens, Booneville ran past Nettleton (4:10), with tailback Dallas Gamble and a very beefy offensive line making life difficult for Nettleton’s defense. Also, Amory snapped a nine-game losing streak in the A-Game by defeating Aberdeen (5:52).

Looking ahead to this Friday, division play begins for 1A teams. That includes Biggersville, which will visit TCPS (6:55). Rivals North Pontotoc and South Pontotoc will meet (7:55). And Tupelo has another strong test coming in the form of Brandon (9:03).

The guys also follow up on last week’s discussion regarding the new basketball state tournament format decided upon by the MHSAA (11:01). And finally, we present Athletes of the Week: Katie Beth Hall of Ingomar and Foster Yates of TCPS (13:16).
