#53: Saltillo streaking; Ingomar loses Russell; soccer playoffs – 01/25/17

‘Tis the busy season in high school sports, with basketball season hitting its stretch run while soccer playoffs crank up. So there’s plenty to talk about today.

On this episode, the guys take a look at the streaking Saltillo Tigers, who are thriving since the return of point guard Julian Warren (2:18). Belmont’s girls continue to do well, too, coming off a big division win against New Site (5:59), and coach Chris Higginbottom recently notched his 300th career victory.

Meanwhile, reigning Class 2A girls champ Ingomar must figure out how to move forward after losing star post player Mallory Russell to a knee injury last weekend (8:12).

Looking ahead, there are a pair of big basketball showcases this weekend: the Hotbed Classic in New Albany (11:41), and the Robertson’s Sportswear Lady Challenge in Booneville (14:52).

Over on the pitch, the soccer playoffs started this week. Tupelo’s boys and girls both won Tuesday (19:16), as did the Mooreville girls (22:43).

And finally, the guys present the Athletes of the Week (24:13).

#52: County tournament recaps; in praise of Joiner – 01/18/17

A slew of county basketball tournaments were held last week, and the guys recap them on this week’s episode.

In Prentiss County, Baldwyn’s boys and Booneville’s girls took home the titles (2:09), but Wheeler’s boys and New Site’s girls made strong impressions. Ingomar swept the Union County trophies (5:26), while Saltillo’s boys and Mooreville’s girls were mild surprises as Lee County champs (7:17).

Also, Blake took in Tuesday’s game between Okolona and Calhoun City (9:02), in which Cam Smith went off for 33 points to lead the Chieftains. And Gene covered Tupelo’s sweep of Hernando (14:13).

This week’s packed episode includes talk of Oxford star Jarkel Joiner (16:21), who despite putting up gaudy numbers is getting almost no recruiting attention. The guys also look ahead to some of this weekend’s big hardwood matchups (24:02), and they present Athletes of the Week (26:43).

#51: Tupelo opens division play; Joiner shows out – 01/11/17

Tupelo’s boys and girls both opened Division 2-6A play Tuesday night with wins (1:24), and that’s the lead item on this week’s episode. But that’s not nearly all that’s gone down on the hardwood the past few days.

Pontotoc’s boys got a breakthrough win against Shannon on Tuesday (3:48), while Oxford’s Jarkel Joiner had a monster game at the Tangle on the Trail last weekend (7:45).

Looking ahead, several county tournaments tip off this week, and there a couple of other single-day events worth noting (12:07). Blake previews his story on Shannon’s C.J. Brim (15:57) and discusses the resignation of East Webster football coach Doug Wilson (17:08).

Plus, the guys present Athletes of the Week (17:55).

#50: Booneville, Corinth rounding into form – 01/04/17

A couple of defending state champs are rounding into familiar form on the basketball court. On this episode, Gene Phelps takes a look at the Booneville girls (1:44), who won the 3A crown last year, while Blake Morgan assesses reigning 4A boys champion Corinth (8:08), which earned a big win over Shannon on Tuesday.

The guys also discuss Ripley’s boys (5:47) and review Tuesday’s game between Itawamba AHS and Mooreville (10:07).

Looking ahead, the first set of Daily Journal basketball rankings are due out Friday (12:30), and several big games are on tap this weekend. Among them are Booneville vs. Belmont girls (14:10) and the Tangle on the Trail lineup at Pontotoc (14:52).
