It’s a busy, busy time of year on the high school sports scene, which means another packed show with Brad and Dalton.
The football playoffs gear up this weekend for Classes 2A, 3A and 4A. There are a couple of notable all-area matchups in 3A, one being Aberdeen at Booneville (10:48). The host Blue Devils are unbeaten and have head coach Mike Mattox back on the sidelines. And then there’s the South Pontotoc-North Pontotoc game (12:50), with the stakes of this rivalry even higher than usual.
As for regular season games, there’s a huge Division 1-1A showdown between Smithville and Biggersville (14:08), as the winner gets to take home the division title. Tupelo closes out its regular season at Oxford (16:10), and Dalton looks at where the Golden Wave will likely end up in the playoff seeding pecking order.
The guys also look back at some of last week’s games. Shannon shut out Pontotoc to win the 2-4A crown (1:22); Tupelo fell victim to Horn Lake’s dominating defense (3:53); and Olive Branch edged Lafayette in a wild finish (6:34).
Football is hardly the only thing going on. Basketball season cranks up this week (17:57), and the Daily Journal will have a preview section in Thursday’s paper.
Also, the state cross country meet is this weekend (20:12). TCPS runner Brock Kelly is seeking redemption after coming up short last year, and Mooreville’s Dylan Allen goes for his third-straight state title after overcoming a weeks-long illness.
The guys also have shoutouts this week for Tupelo swimming, Hickory Flat volleyball and Tupelo soccer (21:57). And finally, Athletes of the Week (23:02).
