The MHSAA basketball state championships wrapped up in Jackson last week, with four area teams bringing home a gold ball. On this episode, Brad, Blake and Gene offer a recap of the action.
In 1A, Pine Grove’s girls broke a long title drought behind the coaching of Katie Bates and the play of Haley Vick and Loren Elliott (2:10). Ashland won the 1A boys crown with a balanced attack – DeAnthony Tipler in the backcourt and Caddarrious Crumb in the post (4:51).
In 4A, Lafayette’s girls won behind the play of senior Shaniyah Buford (7:12). And in 2A, Ingomar’s girls made it two in a row despite losing post standout Mallory Russell mid-season (9:12). Sophomore Gara Beth Self took the leading role for the Lady Falcons, who bring everyone back next season.
Not all of the Northeast Mississippi teams won it all, but Baldwyn’s boys were among those who made a strong run to the title game (13:10).
Now that Blake and Gene are back from Jackson, they must get down to the business of deciding who to include on the Daily Journal’s annual All-Area team. They take a look at some candidates and discuss how the team will be put together (17:53).
And of course we have Athletes of the Week (24:18).
