The offseason has begun for high school sports teams, but there’s plenty of news happening on the coaching front. This week, Gene and Brad look at several head coaching changes, with some familiar names filling posts at Nettleton (1:48), Baldwyn (3:27), New Site (6:21) and Tremont (8:03). There’s been a little action on the football front, too, with Amory hiring a new coach (8:56) and Corinth in search of one (11:09). Also, Gene looks at the top candidates for the Daily Journal’s annual All-Area baseball and softball teams (12:06), and he presents Athletes of the Week (18:03).
Northeast Mississippi made a clean sweep of it at the MHSAA baseball state championships in Pearl. All five area teams brought home titles, and on this week’s show, Gene Phelps and Brad Locke take a look at each winning squad: TCPS in Class 1A (4:08), East Union in 2A (7:50), Kossuth in 3A (11:17), Houston in 4A (14:31), and Oxford in 5A (17:07). Also, Gene presents Athletes of the Week (22:53).
The state softball championships wrapped up last weekend, while the baseball finals got underway this week in Pearl. On today’s show, Brad Locke and Gene Phelps look back at softball, in which two area teams – Mooreville and Smithville – won state titles (1:26). Meanwhile at Trustmark Park, area teams got off on the right foot Tuesday, with Tupelo Christian (9:09), East Union (11:58) and Oxford (15:11) all winning Game 1s. The guys also preview the Kossuth and Houston series beginning today (17:16), and Gene presents Athletes of the Week (21:08).
State champions are being crowned left and right as the spring sports seasons wind down. Today, Brad Locke looks at how area teams fared in the tennis championships (1:18) as well as the track and field championships (2:27). Several area baseball teams are playing in the state semifinals this week (3:00), while three area softball squads are prepping for state championship series (6:09). Also, Itawamba AHS has a new basketball coach (7:23), and Brad presents the Athletes of the Week (8:35).
The Daily Journal put a bow on the 2015-16 basketball season with its All-Area team, which appeared in Sunday’s editions. Gene Phelps and Brad Locke take a look at who made the cut, along with players and coaches of the year (1:11). Also on this episode, an update on baseball playoffs (14:13) and softball playoffs (17:29), state golf champions (19:19), and Tupelo tennis (20:48). Gene also presents Athletes of the Week (21:57).
