Ripley’s baseball program has become a force in Class 4A. On today’s show, Kedrick Storey of the Southern Sentinel joins Brad Locke to talk about the Tigers (1:50), who wrapped up the Division 2-4A title on Tuesday. Area baseball teams are well into the division schedule, and there are several division races to watch. On this week’s episode, Brad Locke and guest co-host David Wheeler look at what’s going on in 4A (1:06), including Tuesday’s Corinth-Amory showdown (5:00). They also discuss Tupelo, which is coming off a win over Hernando (5:48), and preview some big upcoming games as the regular season enters its final two weeks (9:41). There’s plenty else going on, and Brad touches on archery state champs, the Journal Relays, and Lafayette’s new football coach (11:31). He also presents Athletes of the Week (12:58).
Gene Phelps has compiled the Daily Journal’s annual All-Area basketball teams, and while we won’t give anything away, he and Brad discuss some of the leading candidates to make the squad and what goes into the selection process (2:14). Also on this episode, Nettleton has a new head football coach in former Shannon standout Ken Topps (7:58), and the guys also touch on All-Area soccer (1:19). And Gene presents the Athletes of the Week (14:53).
Brad Locke is flying solo this week, as Gene Phelps is out on assignment, so it’s an abbreviated episode. Still worth a listen, though, as Brad looks at a couple of area baseball teams that have started well in division play – Ripley (3:41) and Tupelo (4:14). This week, Gene and Brad are joined by Oxford Citizen sports editor John Davis, who looks back at Mississippi’s win in the Mississippi/Alabama All-Star Game. The Magnolia state squad snapped a seven-game losing streak and got big performances from receivers DK Metcalf (Oxford) and AJ Brown (Starkville).
